Debarshi Nath is a PhD candidate in the School of Engineering at the University of Guelph, supervised by Dr. Manjusri Misra and Dr. Amar K Mohanty. His research work is based on developing and synthesizing bioplastics-based films for food packaging applications. The novel polymer material will be capable of shelf-life extension of perishable food products and have properties similar to conventional plastic materials. His work will have the potential to reduce the usage of non-biodegradable plastics, and replace them with bioplastics, thereby reducing the carbon footprint of the food packaging industries and helping mitigate pollution due to petroleum-based materials.
