Michael Snowdon

Dr. Michael Snowdon is a Research Officer at the National Research Council of Canada’s advanced manufacturing facility in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Michael was appointed this role in September 2022, researching polymers and composites and their processing, manufacturing and characterization for various applications, with an emphasis on more environmentally friendly flexible single-use packaging alternatives and reduced carbon footprint products. Areas include both plastic film/sheets and coated paper-based packaging, as well as rigid and durable thermoplastic goods, using biobased, biodegradable and recyclables material options with life cycle assessment and end-of-life considerations through biodegradability and ecotoxicity assessments and recycling scenarios. Additionally limiting food wastage and monitoring spoilage through smart packaging methods. Michael has authored/co-authored 20 peer-reviewed publications to date. He was recently appointed (Dec. 2024) as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Guelph, in the Department of Plant Agriculture, Ontario Agricultural College. Previously, Michael was the acting Lab Manager and Research Development Specialist for 4 years at the Bioproducts Discovery and Development Centre at the University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Michael has a PhD in biological engineering, a Master’s in plant agriculture and a Bachelor of Science in nanoscience with physics minor all from the University of Guelph.
